A Chilly Weekend

"We were meant to explore this earth like children do...unhindered by fear...propelled by curiosity and a sense of discovery."  -  unknown

"The competition is outside?!"

This realization came to my daughter, Megan, the day before we were leaving for her archery competition, two days before she would be outside shooting in Kentucky with a chilly weekend forecast.  Clearly she needed to repack her suitcase...

The archery competition involves hiking in groups of 4 on trails through the woods to each target.  It takes about 2 hours for 10 targets, she had 4 groups of 10 targets for this competition.  The parents watch them practice, then tell them to have fun as they head for the trail.  She loves it.

Megan shot.  John and I did some exploring.

We found a General Store you could get lost in.  There was anything and everything you could possibly think of: bottles, shovels, tins of all sorts, dishes, remember Coonskin Caps? They had a whole display.  A sealed metal drum labeled 'radioactive'?  They had it...and we walked quickly away from it.  We didn't buy anything at the General store, the prices were a little high, but I did buy some chocolate bourbon balls down the street.  The bourbon balls were good.  :)

We toured a cave.  I love stalagmites and stalactites.  It is also interesting to learn the inventive names given to formations by each cave.  This cave had 'cave bacon'.  The rock formation really looks like bacon as it is lit from behind with artificial light.

The sun came out on Sunday, making the morning temperatures a little more tolerable.  (Luckily it didn't snow until Monday when we were home.)  Megan had fun and did well in the competition.  John and I enjoyed our time there too. :)

Thank you so much for stopping by!
Have a great day!

Michelle

  1. Isn't it fun exploring? The General Store looked like you could get lost there and never find your way out. Lots to look at. Looking at the "bacon" reminded me of our annual trip to Georgia to take mom back to visit her family. We always tried to stop somewhere and Luray Caverns was always a hit when we were little. I remember the formations that fascinated me.

  5. It's been a very long time since I've seen stores filled with these kinds of things. I love the Indian standing at the front of the first one, and selling moccasins (I love moccasins). The archery competition really sounds fun. And caves are so fascinating. I've visited two in Missouri, before my good camera days. Spring is on the way Michelle!!

  6. Ohhhh, I'd love to get lost in that general store....it's a bummer the prices were so high. I find the same thing out here at our once a month vintage faire. The archery competition sounds like a great way to spend the day. I've never spelunking! Fun post Michelle. xo

  8. That archery competition sounds good and the General Store looks like from another world to me, or at least from an old movie... Great that you all found your portion of fun! :)
