Dorothy's Sunflowers

"There is no such thing as an ordinary life."  -  Mark Twain
"There are only two ways to live your life.  One is as though nothing is a miracle.  The other is as though everything is a miracle."  -  Albert Einstein

The  sky was blue and the wind was blowing the day I picked to visit the sunflower field.  As I made my way through and around the sunflowers, I felt like the pictures I was taking were the same pictures I have taken before, same angle, same composition...nothing new...just ordinary.

I decided to call it a day.  Then all of the sudden a teenager running to the sunflowers cries out, in a voice that sounded just like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, "This is the happiest place in the world!"

I looked around for a hidden camera, but didn't see one.  The teenager's mom joined her in the sunflower field and I helped them with a picture.  As I continued on my way, I wondered if I should be a little more excited about the sunflowers.

I decided to look at the sunflowers with 'Dorothy's' excitement, just a little toned down.

When I looked closer I realized there really isn't anything ordinary about a sunflower, their little prickly hairs, curly leaves and pokey petals are actually extraordinary.  Just because I have seen them many times in my 45+ years doesn't make them 'ordinary'.  It is my attitude that makes anything in my life seem 'ordinary'.

With a little 'Dorothy' attitude adjustment... everything can be a miracle.

Thank you so much for stopping by!
Here's to seeing through Dorothy's eyes today!

  1. Bravo! Well done for a great reappraisal of the sunflower and a clutch of precious photos to boot. For me they shout out mid-summer in Spain. They grow in the fields where we live, and they always make me smile. They're exactly how a young child draws a flower: big and bright and cheerful. I love your photos! All the best, Bonny

  8. Michelle, I find your willingness to change your attitude admirable and I like the different processing of the sunflowers, it's nice and interesting. Nowadays more and more people want to excel and be successful and those common things are often not appreciated enough, we take them for granted. I make the same mistake and what's more, I make it repeatedly. Thank you for reminding me that it IS my attitude that makes anything in my life seemingly ordinary, there is so much magic and wonder if we only are willing to see it.

  10. What a beautiful story Michelle! I too have been reminded that there is always something special about things I think are "ordinary" and I've already captured all the beauty they have. A new day, a new view, a new attitude, and I'm ready to go tackle the ordinary. I love your images in a softer tone. I've never seen a sunflower field in my area...it would be a treat to see one.
