Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

"People often say that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder', and I say that the most liberating thing about beauty is realizing that you are the beholder.  This empowers us to find beauty in places where others have not dared to look, including inside ourselves."  -  Salma Hayek

"I like it...but...there's too much out of focus."

I put an arm around my daughter's shoulders as we stand side-by-side staring at my computer screen.

"Bokeh...bokeh...bokeh." I tell her.

She replies, "Mouth?...Mouth?...Mouth?"

"Bokeh...bokeh...bokeh."

"Mouth?"

Speaking slowly and clearly, maybe even a little louder, I add, "BOH...keh."

"Mom, you really need to learn how to pronounce Spanish words before you try to use them."

She turned and walked away.

My daughter thought I was trying, once again, to speak Spanish and then failing miserably.  My Spanish training ended when I quit watching Sesame Street many years ago, which reflects my skill level.   I had no idea 'boca' means 'mouth' in Spanish...now I do...and she will never forget what bokeh is in photography.  :)

I guess bokeh isn't for everybody...but I like it.

I like the mystery, knowing what the subject is and letting my mind fill in the unknown.  I think bokeh is a little magical.  :)

Thank you so much for stopping by!
Have a beautiful day!

Michelle

  1. This is such a delightful post. Love the Sesame Street Spanish learning and your daughters Spanish training. I could see that happening to me since my kids took Spanish all through school. Yeah I love bokeh also, especially the creamy background like you got. Have a wonderful Thursday Michelle.

  3. Yes, this picture is a little magical. That looks like the flower from the dogwood, which has a special meaning behind the flower. I'm wondering if that's what it is. Pretty pictures, Michelle. White flowers are so special, don't you think?

  4. Beautiful, dreamy images of dogwood blooms, Michelle! I can see these in large prints! And the conversation with your daughter is strangely familiar of the ones I've had with my eldest. She's famously known for correcting me (or attempts to). If I say it's white, she says it's black. The joys of raising strong-willed girls. :) Enjoy your weekend! xo

  6. Great low f stop creating that depth of field. It works wonders for any piece from still life to portraits. {P.S. I learned Spanish on Sesame Street, too!}
